When a private lesson is the right tool
Group class moves at the pace of the group. An hour on your own is for the things that need a second set of eyes and immediate correction.
-
Preparing to test
Run your requirements in front of a certified examiner before you submit or step onto the floor. You will hear exactly what will be scored and what will not.
-
One stubborn technique
A hip that will not release, a side kick that collapses, a hyung you have been performing the same wrong way for two years. We spend the hour on that.
-
No school nearby
If you are training through Digital Dojang without a local dojang, a private lesson is how you get direct correction rather than guessing from video.
-
Instructors and studio owners
How to teach a movement, not only how to perform it. Sequencing, cues, common student errors, and where the curriculum is going next.
-
Coming back after time off
Injury, work, a long layoff. An honest assessment of where your technique actually stands now, and a plan to rebuild it without re-injury.
How a session works
-
You tell me what you want to work on
After you book, you will get a short intake message asking for your rank, your goal for the hour, and a video if you have one. I plan the session before we meet, so we are not spending your hour figuring out what to do.
-
We train for sixty minutes
Live over Zoom and recorded so you can review the corrections instead of trying to remember them.
-
You leave with something to practice
Written notes afterward: what changed, what to drill, and how many repetitions before it will feel normal. Corrections are worth very little without the homework that follows them.

Who you are training with
Brian Corrales is a 6th Dan and certified Sa Bom, the master-level teaching certification in Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan. He has trained for more than thirty years and has run his own school, Wasatch Martial Arts Academy in Salt Lake City, for twenty of them. Every private lesson booked here is taught by him personally.
- Dan #36364, issued by Moo Duk Kwan founder Hwang Kee
- Direct lineage to Hwang Kee and Kwan Jang Nim H.C. Hwang; trained at the central dojang in Korea
- US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation Technical Advisory Committee; previously TAC Assistant and Regional Examiner
- Moo Duk Kwan Heritage liaison to the broader Tang Soo Do community
Scheduling and refunds
- Rescheduling. Change your time at no cost with at least 24 hours' notice. Inside 24 hours, or a no-show, the session is used.
- Refunds. An hour you have purchased but not yet scheduled can be refunded in full within 7 days of purchase. Once a session has been taught, it is final.
- Rank testing is separate. A private lesson is instruction, not an evaluation. Rank certification is booked on its own at $79 per attempt, and Dan-level testing is handled through the Federation rather than here. See certification.
- Everything else. Full terms on the refund and cancellation policy page.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to be a Digital Dojang member to book a private lesson?
No. Private lessons are open to anyone at $150 an hour. Pro subscribers and Wasatch Martial Arts Academy students pay $100 an hour.
Can a private lesson be done entirely over Zoom?
Yes. Virtual sessions are taught live over Zoom and work well for forms, technique correction, and test preparation. You need roughly the space of a small room and a camera that can see your whole body.
Do I need to train in Soo Bahk Do or Tang Soo Do?
No. Practitioners from Tae Kwon Do, Shotokan, Shorin-Ryu, and other striking arts book these sessions regularly, and so do people with no martial arts background at all.
How long is a private lesson?
Sixty minutes. Longer blocks and standing weekly sessions can be arranged; ask after your first lesson.
Can my child take a private lesson?
Yes. Children are welcome, and a parent is welcome to stay for the session. Ask about our thirty minute focus sessions that are usually more productive than a full hour.
Can two of us share one session?
Two students in one hour is fine at the same rate, as long as you are working on related material. Larger groups are a seminar rather than a private lesson.
Will a private lesson get me promoted faster?
It will not change the time-in-grade requirements, which are set by the Moo Duk Kwan. What it does is accelerate your learning and technical proficiency which also is required for testing.
